Ag Tech Meets Laser Precision at California Steel Services

Published on December 17th, 2024

California is the largest food producer in the United States and a global leader in ag tech innovation. The state contributes over a third of the nation’s vegetables and nearly three-quarters of its fruits and nuts. At the same time, its thriving ag tech sector recently attracted almost $5 billion in venture capital investment. The agricultural landscape is evolving, so precision-engineered machinery is needed to keep pace with modern efficiency demands.

Enter California Steel Services company, a San Bernardino-based steel distributor and laser cutting service center, since 1983. Recognizing the shifting needs in precision-cut steel products, CalSteel has acquired a fleet of advanced Swiss-made laser-cutting and forming equipment over the last few years from Bystronic, a renowned manufacturer of precision machinery. Their new technologies are game-changers for industries requiring exacting standards, like ag tech.

CalSteel’s Journey into Advanced Laser Cutting

California Steel Services acquired the first laser-cutting machine in 2015. It was the Bystronic BySprint Fiber 4020. The growing demand and encouraging first results paved the way for two more acquisitions, including the BySmart Fiber 4020 in 2020 and the DNE LC3 3015 two years later, in 2022. However, the fleet’s flagship machine is the ByStar Fiber 8025 with 102 inches by 321 inches cutting table, acquired in 2023. With this massive cutting table and unparalleled precision, this machine has become the centerpiece of CalSteel’s operations and the ideal choice for high-tech companies requiring high-quality, scalable solutions.

Laser-Cutting Technology Meets Agriculture

CalSteel recently demonstrated its capabilities in collaboration with a California-based ag-tech startup specializing in innovative harvesting machinery. The startup required laser cut components with exact dimensional tolerances and a quick turnaround to meet production deadlines. Leveraging laser-cutting technology, CalSteel delivered custom-fabricated parts that met and exceeded the client’s expectations.

“Our ability to combine advanced manufacturing technology with acquired industry expertise let us became a trustworthy partner for ag-tech innovators,” says Mr. Razavian, adding, “This project reflects the importance of bridging traditional steel fabrication and precise laser cutting with the evolving needs of modern industries like agriculture.“

Advancing Agricultural Efficiency

The harvesting machine (in the image above) is a single-bed machine that provides clean, accurate, and consistent cutting. It works in all weather conditions, enabling growers to maximize their harvesting efficiency year-round. It exemplifies how modern ag tech innovations can transform agricultural practices. Key benefits of this equipment include:

  1. Clean Cutting: An ultra-sharp band saw blade ensures precise cuts, preserving crop quality.
  2. Floating Linkage: Tracks along the bed top for accurate cutting height, enabling reliable harvesting in all weather conditions.
  3. Stainless Steel Construction: Prevents paint flakes or rust contamination, ensuring food safety.
  4. Rapid Bin Change and Onboard Bin Carrier: Improves efficiency by reducing downtime during harvest.

The Project Details

CalSteel utilized the ByStar Fiber 8025 laser cutting machine, taking advantage of its:

  • Large Cutting Table: Measuring 102 inches by 321 inches, the ByStar Fiber 8025 allows you to fabricate large quantities and laser-cut products and part components efficiently, ensuring rapid turnaround times. This capability reduces material changes, producing thousands of parts in a few hours.

  • Precision and Repeatability: The machine’s precision extends to smaller projects. It handles small steel plates, and the prototype runs with identical quality and accuracy. You get similar results when cutting a single prototype or thousands of production parts. This reliability is crucial for any assembly manufacturing company aiming to maintain consistency across its supply chains.
  • Scaling Seamlessly: You can order small batches for design testing and real-world trials. Once the designs are validated, you can transition to high-volume production while maintaining identical specifications across all parts.

DXF Nesting: Maximizing Material Utilization

Another notable advantage is CalSteel’s use of Bysoft Cam – the DXF nesting software. The software can import part geometry from CAD, apply cutting parameters, and create nests manually or automatically. CalSteel’s engineers precisely map clients’ parts onto steel plates or sheets of any size, ensuring optimal use of the material during CNC laser cutting.

Benefits of nesting techniques include:

  • Minimized Waste: By arranging parts efficiently, CalSteel reduces material waste, contributing to sustainable practices.
  • Cost Efficiency: Lower material waste translates to competitive pricing for clients.
  • Flexibility for Projects: From large plates for production runs to more miniature sheets for prototypes, nesting ensures every project benefits from maximum efficiency.

A Vision for the Future

The future for such partnerships goes beyond individual projects. Advanced harvesting and seeding machines enhance agricultural efficiency, reduce food waste, and promote sustainability. This collaboration between CalSteel and ag tech start-ups demonstrates the potential of pairing advanced manufacturing capabilities with cutting-edge agrarian innovations.

As the demand for innovative agricultural solutions continues to rise, so does the need for manufacturers that can deliver precision-engineered components today. Not only that, but to shape the future of the industries they serve. California Steel Services is committed to supporting innovation with advanced manufacturing solutions, ensuring that our sunny state remains at the forefront of feeding our nation.
